After a year in Canada, Martin lived in the Cotswolds & Tewksbury in Gloucestershire. He and his family moved to Lancashire when he was 6, and that‘s where he really grew up. It was during these years he developed his love of all things to do with ‘natural history’ and landscapes. Drawing and painting were more or less an everyday activity. Both his Grandfathers were competent painters – and he was taught a lot about wildlife by his maternal Grandfather.
A big influence on Martin in both art & wildlife was the work of Charles Tunnicliffe – he illustrated many series of PG tips tea cards – which he collected avidly. He also illustrated the marvellous ladybird books ‘What to Look for’ – Spring-Summer – Autumn & Winter.
Martin attended Art School in Wigan, then went to Leicester Poly to study Industrial Design in Ceramics & Glass.
He has worked as a commercial artist in several fields. Firstly in Wallpaper & Textiles, this involved preparing artworks for making printing rollers, which were used to print both textiles and wallpapers. It was very technical, but quite rewarding for him. Next position was asa Photographic Retoucher & artist, for national press titles.
After a move to London Martin worked as a ‘Visualiser’ in Advertising. Working freelance through studios, producing work for advertising pitches or campaigns, mainly ‘story boards’. He also did some ‘Illustration’ for publishing & press. In 1990 he started a ‘Creative Services Studio’ and they did Story Boards, Animatics, and Illustrations for major advertising agencies in London.
Martin has always painted for pleasure – in spite of ‘the day job’. He has had various exhibitions and worked on commissions. He has won a ‘paint a pub sign’ competition. He has also produced some ‘painting tuition’ products for a company in China, which includes writing books for them.
He is enjoying producing Linocut prints, a recent discipline for him, as well as painting. His favourite medium is watercolour. He likes the challenge of recreating a feeling of a place or a mood.View Full Bio
