Artist Feature - Dan Howarth Nov 20 2014

Meet the artists

Very excited to have Dan Howarth as our featured children's book artist today and hopefully you can see why! Dan is one of our long established artists with a fantastic portfolio full to the brim with strong traditional illustrations for children's books. His impossibly gorgeous characters are brought to life through his top notch technical ability and great use of colours and textures, while his stunning backgrounds really immerse you into the scenes. See more at his online portfolio!

I studied for and gained a degree in Illustration at university in Exeter and has been illustrating since leaving in 1995. I have worked as an animator, a greeting’s card designer and have illustrated around one hundred children’s books worldwide.

I illustrated my first book, for Usborne, in 1997 called 'Land of the Lost Teddies' and then joined Advocate Art Agency that same year. I have been with them ever since, illustrating over a hundred titles for numerous publishers, including Harper Collins, Scholastic, Ladybird, Hodder and Bloomsbury.

I'm a country boy at heart and has a large collection of pet animals too they have helped him to create his beautiful and detailed characters of his animals in his many works. I currently live in a thatched cottage in Devon, with my author wife Heidi and two children, Chloe 15 and Ben 11. We share our home with two dogs, 30 chickens, 4 ducks and lots of wild rabbits...with sheep and cows living in adjacent fields. Lots of inspiration all around! I work from a studio in the garden and from my window can usually see cows, sheep, chickens and ducks.

When I'm not illustrating, myself and my wife sometimes visit local schools, to talk about our work and share a story.

I also love cycling and running, competing in many charity events and I'm also taking part in my second triathlon this year.
