Throwback Thursday! Gareth Williams Oct 04 2018

Meet the artists

It’s time for another Throwback Thursday and this week’s feature is the wonderful Gareth Williams who’s been with us since 2015. Gareth is one of our talented illustrators who has been designing beautiful greetings cards, for valentines, birthdays, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s day and many more! His vibrant, quirky designs are perfect for many other licensing products too. More recently he has entered into children’s publishing developing fun characters and exciting worlds, becoming especially popular with ages 0-5. Here at Advocate Art, we’ve loved watching Gareth’s work expand into different categories, and like Gareth, enjoy his funny puns too!

We did a short Q&A with Gareth to find out what some of his first memories of working with us were – read on to discover what inspires him and how his time with Advocate has been so far. You can also see more of Gareth’s work via his online portfolio and by scrolling through the images above – enjoy!

1) First Image you sent to Advocate, and was there a story behind it.
My background has been in greeting cards for over 10 years so I wanted to broaden my portfolio and start looking into children's books and characters. I've always loved coming up with new characters and the worlds they would live in.

2) First Agent to sell one of your designs, what design was it and who was it to.
My first ever sales were two Valentines card designs for Henderson Greetings based in Australia that Natasha had help sell for me. I remember being really happy with my cards being sold down under!

3) First live commission from a client, who was the client and what was the project.
My first commission was for The Original Poster Company. Based on some similar designs in my portfolio they wanted a birthday design that would appeal to teenagers. I was great working with them as they allowed me to have full reign on the design.

4) First time you knew you wanted to be an Illustrator - an image, a person, an exhibition etc..
I have always loved Roald Dahl stories and along with Quentin Blake's illustrations the stories really came to life. I remember always drawing some of the characters he drew. I have all the old editions of the books.  My favourite was George's Marvelous Medicine.

5) First Sample you received with your designs on - do you have a picture of it and tell us about the project.
This was a for a double page spread I did for Girl Talk magazine. I loved piecing it all together and wanted to get as much detail in the spread so it was a challenge to colour it all in!

6) First time you were proud of a piece of artwork, what was it and why.
It has to be a design I did recently. I've started to work more on children books and this design was so much fun to work on.  I love composition and the limited colour palette.  Hopefully I will get to develop this for an actual live project soon.

7) Back to the Present - what are you working on now?
Recently I have been working on some fun, Juvenile designs.  If I can get a pun in there then it's a bonus.

Gareth Williams was founded by our team of illustration agents, based at our UK and USA agencies. If you think Gareth, or any of our other illustrators would be perfect for an upcoming project you have, be sure to reach out to an agent!
