New Lab idea - Gina Maldonado Dec 13 2018News
Here at Advocate-Art we’re thrilled to announce an exciting, very seasonal update - Gina Lorena Maldonado has just wrapped up creating a new book idea with our sister studio Collaborate! This is Gina’s first time developing an idea with Collaborate, and in this instance she wrote and illustrated the idea herself, and we have to say the final product is stupendous!
Christmas has always been Gina’s absolutely favourite time of year, and since 2013 she has developed an advent calendar annually. She then goes ahead and posts these images daily to her social media accounts, so make sure you keep an eye out!
Kindness Christmas Advent is a culmination of these factors, and it is a book about showing kindness during the holiday season. To accompany these gorgeous illustrations, she came up with a small random act of kindness. The idea is inspire the reader to do something (however small) to bring joy, happiness, and a bit of Christmas cheer to those around them every day throughout the season. And what a lovely idea it is!
The inspiration for the designs found in Kindness Christmas Advent are a combination of traditional Chinese paper cutting and her love of woodland animals. When we asked for a bit more about her process, and we found her explanation rather enlightening. She starts by choosing a theme and colour palette to use throughout the 25 illustrations of the project (and she’s not afraid to experiment!). Once she decides on that, she starts making sketches of whatever ideas she has as tiny thumbnails, and once she likes an idea she creates the sketch. Once the sketch is finalised, she colours it up in Illustrator - and often finds that the final product ends up very different (albeit improved) from the originally conceived idea. You can see an example of said process in the above slides.
Gina’s delightful characters, exquisite palette and inspiring acts of kindness make this a book idea that will be loved by readers across the board. Gina's style has made her the perfect artist for Children's Publishing, especially for readers aged 0-5. If you’d like to inquire more about it, please get in touch with one of our agents. Above you will see more from the book as well as some process shots, but you can also always check out more of Gina’s lovely illustrations via her online portfolio.
