New Market Trends - Sharon Montgomery Jan 28 2019

Licensing Trends

January is almost over, and to wrap up the (almost) end of the month, our talented Art Licensing artist, Sharon Montgomery, is sharing with us the latest market trends! We asked Sharon to tell us what inspires her stunning illustrations, what she thinks is trendy and what trends she thinks will be popular for this year.

Sharon's stunning designs are filled with vibrant colour and textures, created through her delicate painterly technique. They are perfect for greeting's cards, stationery, calendars, notebooks, wall art and so much more! We asked Sharon to share with us what inspires her and what she believes the trends of 2019 will be, have a read through the short Q&A below, and scroll through the images above. Who knows, we may be seeing some more of these trends appear later in the year!

If you'd like to see more work by this amazing, available artist, check out her online Advocate portfolio, or get in touch with one of our agents to see our brand new licensing portfolios!

1) What are your main sources of inspiration?
I love Pinterest for images of antique textiles, ceramics and pottery. The colour combinations found in antique rugs and tapestries are wonderful. I also love to travel and visit art galleries/museums. And I love to follow modern florists on Instagram for gorgeous floral inspiration. I am lucky to live close to forest and beaches - nature is an endlessly inspiring to me.

2) Where do you look for upcoming trends?
I am lucky to be provided current trend boards by Advocate agents, haha, but aside from that I love European and UK decor magazines, as they tend to be more fashion forward than North American ones.

3) What do you think will be the next big colour of the year?
Well, according to Pantone, it's Living Coral. I have noticed that the pale blush pink/gold combo trend has moved towards a more desert/earthy palette of terracotta, camel, and deep yellow which I am digging.

4) We've had llamas, hedgehogs, and sloths, but what do you think will be the next trending animal?
Haha - if I only knew! I get asked this a lot and I am so ready to move on from unicorns, llamas and sloths. I've been seeing a lot of elegant birds like cranes, peacocks and, on the cuter side, budgies. I've noticed the trend seems to be moving toward images of strong women/figures as well.

5) What is your studio space like? Are you more of a morning worker or a night owl? How do you decorate your studio walls?
I work in an area upstairs in my house - it's not really a room, as it doesn't have a door. but it's bright and cosy with lots of natural light. My view is not exciting - just the roof of the house next door, but that doesn’t stop me from staring out the window daydreaming constantly! I am a morning worker, once the kids are off to school and the house is quiet and my own. I need daylight to work. I often joke I am solar-powered and my brain starts to shut down around 4pm!

My studio walls have paintings of mine, bits of colour inspiration, drawings by my kids, and tools like rulers and t-squares - it's a real mishmash!

6) What has been you're favourite trending animal thus far?
I really did love the llama/ alpaca trend. They are so cute and fun to paint.

7) Do you feel that certain trends take off in different parts of the world?
Definitely - I think whether the animal or motif is considered exotic in your part of the world has a lot to do with it. I'm sure in Costa Rica nobody gets excited over sloths, whereas we think they're so unusual. Then again, maybe they do!

Sharon Montgomery was founded by our team of illustration agents, based at our UK and USA agencies. If you think any of our artists would be perfect for an upcoming project you have, be sure to get in touch with an agent!
