Meet the agents

Laura joined us as an intern late last year and well, we never let her go…. Organised, energetic and with a great creative "eye"  we thought she would make a perfect Illustration Agent. She earnt her illustration  wings by managing a big and very complex project over the Summer. Now she has just moved round the corner from work a handy crash pad as well! A few words of introduction from the Lady herself:

As a child I was a pretty voracious reader and drawer; my parents would always find me in little cosy nooks about the house – in the airing cupboard, my wardrobe with a torch, under the blankets when I should have been sleeping – scribbling away at a new picture or chasing a story.

I never lost that passion for pictures or for books, which led me to take a degree in English Literature at University College London. Of course I couldn't let the creative side of me go; while I was there I took as many painting courses as I could and took up a position as Art and Design Editor for a creative writing and arts magazine. When I moved back to London after graduating, it was to a tiny room with only one bookcase. I realised I couldn't take the whole of my personal library, so I just took the books which mattered most to me: all the books I read as a child. After three years of studying long-dead poets and writers who went off into the woods to search their souls, I found myself drawing wisdom instead from Winnie the Pooh, Paddington, Ronald Searle's 'Molesworth' series and Gerard Durrell's stories about animals. As an Artist Agent at Advocate, I'm in the ideal position to exercise my child's delight in books and beautiful pictures. I love working with artists, and in particular find it incredibly satisfying when collaborating with fresh graduates and unpublished illustrators. It's so satisfying when you can help secure a new artist their first job! Most of all I like to see people's creativity rewarded, and observe them building a career around doing something they really enjoy.
