Creative Cribs - Kathryn Selbert Feb 20 2019

Rencontrez les artistes

Creative Cribs is back and today we are getting an inside look at the studio of our talented artist, Kathryn Selbert. Kathryn is a versatile artist who does both publishing and licensing work, who is based in Connecticut and will soon be moving to New York City near our US office. She shares her studio with her dog Margot, who was the inspiration for her book idea, Margot Moves!

Kathryn's diverse style has allowed her designs to feature on Greetings Cards, Stationery, Wall Art, Ceramics, as well as fun children's book for ages 0-5. If you'd like to see where Kathryn creates her magical illustrations, scroll through the images above and check out our Q&A below. You can see Kathryn's full portfolio by checking our her online portfolio, and if you think Kathryn's style would be perfect for an upcoming project, get in touch with one of our agents to arrange a meeting! We know you're probably getting geared up for London Book Fair and Bologna Children's Book Fair so we'd love to get involved!

1. Walk us through a normal day for you in the studio.
My daily schedule is pretty regular (and probably not that exciting)! I wake up around 7:30 and greet the day by taking my dog for a walk around the neighbourhood/playing some fetch.

I work from a home studio so it’s a quick commute. I settle down at my desk around 8am with breakfast and start answering emails and reviewing my schedule to see what needs to be done that day (I have a big white board with all my deadlines mapped out).

2. What do you normally work on?
What I work on changes rapidly and daily - I work on book projects, licensing callouts/commissions for greeting cards, patterns etc, commissions from clients for wedding stationery or portraits. I do a lot of calligraphy, drawing digitally and painting with watercolours. This is a pretty clean desk for me - usually it’s covered watercolour paintings, pens and my paints.

3. What keeps you working throughout the day?
I spend most days listening to podcasts or watching Twitch/Youtube videos while I’m working. Since I work alone, it’s nice to have some voices in the background. Some of my favourites podcasts are Heavyweight, Slate Political Gabfest, The Longest Shortest Time, Reply All and How I Built This.  On Twitch I just watch Cohhcarnage - he’s such a positive presence!

4. Do you have a daily routine?
There’s always something to work on so I try to get in as much as I can! I usually draw or edit the images  I’m working on until around 5 or 6pm.

I then work out for a half an hour before walking my dog again and making dinner before either getting back to work if there’s a big deadline or going out with friends or my boyfriend if my schedule isn’t as packed.

5. Any exciting things coming up for you?
I’m moving to New York City in a few weeks so these are the last photos of my studio I’ll be taking! I’d show you more of the madness but most of my studio stuff is already in boxes! I wish I could show you our new view! My new desk view will be of the Manhattan skyline.
