Chris Modafferi: Our New Italian Agent - Advocate Art grows globally! Oct 26 2021Meet the agents (NEW)
Chris Modafferi is an editor-turned agent with 7 years of experience in publishing. Before moving into agenting, she worked at Penguin Random House, Bloomsbury and Scholastic in London. She feels very lucky to have worked with brands such as Baby Shark, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler as well as award-winning author/illustrators Kate Pankhurst and Matt Roberston.
She recently moved back to Italy, where her family is originally from, to set up Advocate Art's Italian branch and she loves working with clients and speaking Italian. Since joining Advocate, Chris has been ambitiously growing her Italian client base, landing exciting jobs with new clients (to be announced soon!) and working closely with artists to grow Advocate's wonderful roster of picture book illustrators.
Why did you become an illustration agent?
I moved into the agency scene after a long stint as a children's book editor - I worked at Penguin Random House, Bloomsbury and then Scholastic before deciding that I wanted a longer-term relationship with my illustrators that went beyond working on one project or (if I'm lucky!) a series with them. I also think Advocate Art are THE best agency on the market and when I found out about this role I couldn't help but want to be part of Advocate's global growth!
What do you enjoy most about this job?
I love working closely with illustrators and helping them make their dreams come true! I also enjoy meeting new people every day and learning more about the many different things you can do with illustration. Building a new territory is so exciting: I am meeting new clients every day with new illustration needs and slowly Advocate is gaining more and more Italian clients! It's all very exciting!
What do you hope to achieve here at Advocate?
As an editor, I was trained to always keep a close eye on the market and its needs - I hope to help illustrators keep their finger on the pulse! I'm also really looking forward to getting back to my Italian roots by working in Italian with our clients in the good old boot! I also am excited about growing the Advocate Art love globally; this is a huge opportunity!
What have you been up to lately?
I'm excitedly sitting at the airport right now - I'm flying to Milan! There I will briefly greet a few clients and then it's on to Turin for the Salone Internazionale del Libro, one of the biggest publishing fairs in Italy.
In between meetings, I help my author-illustrators turn their ideas into books! It's really great that I can still be an editor in many ways and learn new skills at the same time!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Having recently moved back to Italy after 7 years in the UK, I spend most of my time with my family, friends and loved ones catching up on all the birthdays and holidays I've missed! I also have a TikTok account where I give advice to authors, illustrators, budding editors and creatives about the publishing industry and finding an agent. I find it really rewarding to help people.
