Artist Review - Katie Abey Dec 11 2019精選插畫家
Katie Abey has come a long way since her first little market stall in 2014. Back then she was individually hand-writing her product labels, dreaming of making a living from doing what she loved. Today she’s soaring; not only with a successful business, an enviable freelance practice, two high street stores, two employees and an absolute armful of published work but also with a festival to her name!
“Some days every particle of my existence would feel like it was filled with magic.”
Upon graduating from her Graphic Design course Katie set herself the challenge to do ‘an illustration everyday’. A practice that lasted five years, helping to build her confidence and cement her iconic style. It was during this time, in the first year of her practice, that Katie opened her Etsy Shop and joined the ranks at Advocate Art.
Almost 100,000 sales later her business has boomed with Katie being one of the top five seller’s on Etsy in the UK. Her catalogue of products spans mugs, socks, pins, greetings cards and everything in between all sold under the wonderful tagline: ‘Happiness, motivation and sarcasm in gift form’. Expansion was a necessity and her first store opened in Alfreton in Feb, 2018 with the second, Pennydukes following in Matlock in Dec, 2018.
To co-inside with the launch of her brick’s and mortar stores, Katie, alongside a group of independent business owners, created ’Happy Fest’. A local festival in Alfreton to champion local creatives and an independent high street. A true testament to her entrepreneurial, community spirit!
Alongside all of this Katie has been feverishly working away on her personal practice. Her artworks have been sold through nationwide chains Paperchase and WHSmith as well as being published by Bloomsbury. Books include 'We Wear Pants' (2018) and 'We Eat Bananas' (2019) with a hotly anticipated follow up ‘We Catch the Bus’ set to hit shelves on 23rd January 2020. Another series entitled, ‘Mindful Kids’ is geared towards helping children deal with topics such as emotions, bereavement, the environment and anxiety has simply been described as ‘…fabulous’.
Katie’s now looking to expand even further. Her books may have reached shelves as far away as India, the USA and Australia and been translated into over five languages but she’s not stopping there. 2020 will see the release of her latest book, 'We Catch the Bus’ and the potential expansion of her business directly into foreign markets. Watch this space!
