Hi, I'm Ray Shuell, a traditional watercolour artist with a passion for adding a touch of magic to my realistic wildlife paintings. Based in rural Lancashire, I draw inspiration from the countryside and my love for animals, creating atmospheric scenes that transport viewers to new and enchanting worlds. Layering gossamer-like watercolours, I bring to life woodland settings teeming with creatures big and small, or icy landscapes inhabited by penguins and seabirds. My art is a blend of realism and fantasy, aiming to offer a glimpse of a whimsical realm as a soothing escape from the chaos of our world.
Having enjoyed success with near sell-out shows in London and Manchester, I've also illustrated six children's books, finding particular joy in one particular book depicting the life of penguins in a fun and realistic manner. Clients appreciate my soft, well-coordinated color palette and the depth of character in my wildlife scenes, enhanced by my graphic design background that ensures strong composition and eye-catching layouts. While my art begins with traditional watercolour techniques, I embrace digital enhancements to add intriguing elements to my creations, always open to tailoring my work to meet clients' specific needs.
From a childhood fascination with endangered species to drawing inspiration from the natural world and Victorian illustrators, I continue to find joy and inspiration in every stroke of my paintbrush. For me, any day spent painting is a good day, accompanied by a bit of time in the kitchen and the company of my beloved pets. As a dedicated artist and a loving father, I strive to create art that not only captivates but also brings a sense of wonder and tranquility to those who view it, offering a glimpse into a world where reality and fantasy meld seamlessly.
