Hello, my name is Rebeca Barragán. I am from northern Spain, I live close to Barcelona in a coastal town. My illustration style is simple, warm and aesthetic. I like to work closely with clients to ensure they are as happy as possible with the result. I work mainly digitally. My drawings are simple. I could say that my childhood (I grew up in the 80s) with 2D video games had a big influence on me, and they play a very important role in my current style. That's why I tend to make my characters and settings flat and simple, but with fun and beautiful details. I mostly draw animals, and although I like them all, my favourites are cats and dogs. I love going for walks in nature; it helps me disconnect from stress and relaxes me a lot. I like calligraphy; we did it at school when I was little and I loved it, so now I sometimes practise it in adult books. I'm planning to take up pottery; it's something that really appeals to me and I'd like to produce my own collection. And finally, I like going out to eat. I am passionate about food and enjoy it with my family and friends. As an introvert and shy person, I really enjoy working from home in the company of my two cats. I have always been a quiet person. I like listening more than talking, and I am not very good at expressing myself. My way of expressing myself is through drawings.
When I was studying illustration, I won the Canson cover competition 2001-2002. One of the works I am most proud of are the first four illustrated books I have created under the direction of I am a Bookworm. It has been my first collaboration in the publishing industry, and I have thoroughly enjoyed getting started in this sector. Customers appreciate easy communication and meeting deadlines, and I do my utmost to ensure that the work is done as well as possible. They definitely like my animal characters. In the art licensing sector, I have to create them in many different ways. I try to be quick, listen carefully to what the customer wants, and make any necessary changes to ensure they are satisfied. After compulsory education, I did an Artistic Baccalaureate, which gave me access to a vocational training course in Illustration at the Escola Massana in Barcelona and another course of Graphic Design. As a designer, I like to look at the composition and ensure that it has a certain harmony.
Before starting work, I make pencil sketches because I need to organise the ideas that come to mind. Sometimes I use real pencils and other times I use my iPad, which achieves a very good effect, depending on where I am. The cartoons I watched as a child had a huge influence on my imagination. Some examples are: Arale, which I loved in every detail, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Heidi, Vicky the Viking, etc. As for illustrated books, I remember the wonderful illustrations of María Pascual Alberich. In fact, I still have a few copies and I still think they are so beautiful. When I need inspiration I like visiting bookshops and libraries, as well as stationery shops. I like walking around Barcelona in the sunshine, observing the architecture, the people and the shops, to get away from the routine of being at home. On Sundays, I like to go for a walk in the countryside, visiting a pretty village in Catalonia. In colder weather, I might be at home with my cats and my partner watching a series or film. Or both on the same day! I would like to be remembered as someone whose illustrations brought imagination and wonder to children. I am an animal lover. I have always had dogs and cats, and currently have two senior cats.
