Hello, I'm Sue Downing, an illustrator residing in the vibrant Ouseburn community of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. My art, characterized by minimal, colorful, and blocky forms, aims to convey complex information with purpose clarity and humor. Drawing directly into illustrator, I've honed a personal visual language that engages young readers across various subjects, from architectural structures to fairytales. Influenced by mid-century modern design and Japanese Flat Art, my work reflects a commitment to minimalism and playful aesthetics, employing bold shapes and vibrant palettes to captivate diverse audiences.

My portfolio boasts accolades like the Elle Decoration Original Design Shortlist and the Herriot Watt University Prize for outstanding merit, showcasing my expertise in creativity outside of illustration. Collaborating with the esteemed Little People Big Dreams series, I had the privilege of illustrating the Anna Pavlova book, immersing myself in research to authentically depict her story. As an independent artist, I excel in meeting deadlines, interpreting briefs, and bringing clients' visions to life with sensitivity and creativity. With a BA (Hons) in Design and Applied Arts, my multidisciplinary background fuels fresh ideas, from ceramics to jewelry design, enriching my illustrative style.

Beyond my artistic endeavors, I find joy in exploring galleries, attending gigs, and engaging with new experiences that fuel my creative process. With a deep-rooted belief in equality and diversity, I infuse my work with positivity and a sense of inclusivity. As a mother of two imaginative children and a proud owner of a one-eyed cat named Martha, I draw inspiration from cultural points of reference and everyday life, aiming to invite discovery and spread happiness through my art. I continue to evolve as an artist, driven by a passion for storytelling and a commitment to creating meaningful connections through my illustrations.
