Artist Feature: Laura Sua Sep 23 2013
Meet the artistsToday's Artist feature comes from New Artist Laura Sua, whilst new to Advocate Art she has a vast experience in Children's illustration, which you can certainly tell from the way she composes her scenes. With Excellent use of perspective, she gives the viewer a new dimension to every spread, coupled with her charming characters and her gentle balance of neutral shades with colours that pop, she really is able to draw the reader into areas of importance within each scene. We are Happy to have her aboard and look forward to sharing more of her samples on her online and printed folios; for a preview and a few words from Laura herself:
I was born in Santander (Spain) on the June 17th, 1978 but I was raised in torrelavega where I now live with my husband and my two children. Since I was little, Ive dedicated all my time to draw and I always counted with my family's support to carry on doing it. I used to spend hours looking at my father drawing and making wood sculptures. Nowadays, I feel identify with various artists like the Japanese ukiyo-e, Hokusai, painters like Modigliani, Schiele, El Bosco... And illustrators like Aubrey Beardsley, Rebecca Dautremer, Ana Juan ..... On my most personal art I normally represent people with strong features that show a big personality but at the same time sensibility; I try to show the minimum detail with a retro side similar to an old photograph. I tend to draw first in pencil, and due to lack of time and tent to finish colour them in with photoshop. I've been a part of some expositions and the latest and most punctual was "Otra manera de contar" (2012). I've won various competitions as an illustrator of comics, posters based on culture and festive events. My most important award was "Pancho Cossio" (2010). My first book was the comic "El hombre pez" (2005). With Jose Manuel Cordoba Im partner of Autogiro Illustration Studio; Founded in 2005 we´ve created over 30 published books and more projects. I love reading so it'll be difficult for me to choose only one book, but i recently have read "Viento del Este, Viento del Oeste" (Pearl Black) and Shigeru Mizuki's comics. My movies would be "Big fish", "Fight club", "The last king of Scotland"... I feel quiet inspired by music while I'm drawing, specially bands like Dionysos, Johnny Cash, Feist, N.I.N., Depeche Mode...
