Agent Feature: Bhavi Patel from Advocate to ITSme Sep 04 2023

Meet the agents

Hi! I’m Bhavi, and I’m the Senior Art Director at Advocate Art. I’ve been with the agency for 5 and a half years. Before joining Advocate, I graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a 1st Class Honours degree in Illustration. In between working as a freelance illustrator, I also spent 1 year working for the V&A Museum, and 2 and a half years at the Royal Academy of Arts working in Art Sales and Exhibition Management. Wanting to go back to my Illustration roots, it felt like a natural fit to return back to Advocate, whom I interned with between my 2nd and 3rd year at university, this time with some industry experience behind me.

I began my role at Advocate as an Artist Agent, slowly progressing over my 5 years to become the company’s Senior Art Director. Having had the opportunity to work with a range of clients across Publishing and Licensing, it felt right to join forces with ITSme, giving me the opportunity to share all my knowledge with budding new talent and artists through our Mentorship Program and Educational videos. My favourite thing about working with Advocate has been the broad variety of projects I’ve had the opportunity to work; from Picture Books and Board Books, to Non-Fiction titles and Middle Grade Fiction too. It’s been a great way to get insight into what each kind of project involves, and I’ve been able to share that knowledge to help artists tailor their portfolios based on their career path.

When I look back on my time with Advocate, my most memorable projects have been:
Escape Room Adventures illustrated by Sian James for Arcturus
The Secret Mountain illustrated by Kaja Kajfez for Scholastic
Femi and the Mindfulness Machine illustrated by Sawyer Cloud for DK Books
Castle Rock Mystery Crew written by Vicky McClure, illustrated by Alan Brown for Scholastic
Marcelline: Defender of the Sea written by Jen Campbell, illustrated by Valentina Toro for HarperCollins
Friends are Amazing written by the Pride of Britain winners Hughie Higginson and Freddie Xavi, illustrated by Erica Salcedo for Scholastic
Growing Up Black in Britain written by Stuart Lawrence, illustrated by Simone Douglas for Scholastic
