Artist Feature - Paul Nicholls Feb 21 2024

This month we are highlighting an illustrator who has been with Advocate since the beginning, Paul Nicholls! 

Being with us since 2001, Paul has been able to work on a wide variety of projects. He does everything from picture books to greeting cards to advertising. 

“During my time I've been lucky enough to work on several varied and interesting projects, including character development and illustrating a number of books for an Emmy award winning children's animated TV series in America. Another important project was a large series of sticker books for Usbourne books.”

Through his many years and vast experience, he also has been able to see his work all around the world. 

“More recently I’ve been working on several children’s books from clients from all over the world, from America, Germany, South Korea, as well as the UK.”

As his popularity continues, he reflects on his time with Advocate Art and his work.

“I’ve been represented by Advocate for over 20 years, from back in the days of sending sketches off by fax and dial up broadband… but now I currently work digitally through a Wacom tablet and the latest Adobe CC software ”

While having experience working in different mediums, he says his strength is in his characters.

“I'd say my biggest strength is character development, I like to produce characters and images which contain a bit of humour”

Paul continues to take on projects after settling down with his partner, another Advocate artist! 

“I live in a small town on the coast of west Wales with my partner and fellow Advocate Illustrator, Melanie Mitchell, and our two children. We are currently nearing the end of the long process of self building our home.”

When they aren’t working on their latest titles or building their new home, they enjoy the Welsh outdoors doing activities like mountain biking, golfing, and chasing their kids on the beach. 

After 20 years, Paul’s work continues to bring smiles and laughter to everyone. We at Advocate can’t wait to spend another 20 together!
