Artist Feature - Anuki Lopez Mar 14 2024
Meet the artistsThis month we are highlighting the adorable style of illustrator Anuki Lopez. Her cute and bright characters have made her a favorite among publishers around the world.
Having such a cute style, it’s fun to talk with Anuki and learn more about what she’s like herself. In real life, she’s just as bubbly and positive:
"I consider myself a happy and positive person - I'm always making jokes, I love to make people laugh and I try to express that part of my personality in my illustrations. Using happy and vivid colors, drawing my characters as expressively as possible. Now I'm working on making more funny scenes, not just cute and happy illustrations.”
She loves expressing that happiness and positivity in her illustrations. But what inspires such positivity? Anuki finds inspiration in her culture, in nature, and from her family and friends around her.
“My inspiration are life itself, my family, the daily things like having a coffee or walking my dog, meeting my friends, and my lovely city, Sevilla, that is part of Andalucia (Spain), an amazing place full of culture and history - you can see the influence of Andalucia in my illustrations. I like to share with the world a little bit of my culture. I have a really big love for nature too: forests, trees, plants, animals - and dogs, that's my favorite thing to draw in the world. Which leads me to talk about the biggest inspiration: my dog Tanuki. She's a very funny dog who has been with me since I started my path as an illustrator, and she's always there for me to make me happy.”
Since starting her path as an illustrator, Tanuki and the others around her have to continue drawing and become the great artist she is today. Over the years she has worked on titles around the world and has been published numerous times.
“I am lucky to have published books in a lot of places. My main clients are from the USA, but I have also published in the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, now I'm working for the Czech Republic, and I'm starting to work in my own country, Spain, which makes me very happy! Since I started my path with Advocate Art, I'm very happy to say that I've published a good number of books. My first one was Katt vs Dogg in 2019 and since then I've been working on different books."
When talking about her many publications, she mentioned an soon to be released series she is excited about:
“I'm really excited about some books that I'm developing right now. I'm ending a 4 book series about three girls and their adventures with their horses - I was afraid to draw horses, but it has ended up being something that I'm truly enjoying to draw!”
As agents, it’s always exciting to see an illustrator try new things and learn something new they enjoy. It’s been great to see Anuki grow like this since joining us in 2017.
When asked about working with Advocate, she continued to discuss how we’ve helped with what to draw and guiding her portfolio:
“The most important advice that the agents gave to me is to draw what I would like to draw in a book. If I like dogs, then I have to draw a lot of dogs in order to get a dog book. Seems very obvious but it's not! In addition to all the advice that I received to improve my art style, like connecting my art to my roots, helping me with creative ideas for new illustrations, or giving me suggestions on what is not represented in my illustrations.”
We all at Advocate can’t wait to see more new, adorable illustrations from Anuki!
