Meet the artists

This month we are highlighting Maria Brzozowska. Pulling from her multicultural background and combining it with her love of surrealism, she creates beautiful worlds in her illustrations.

Maria was born in Poland but then raised in Turkey. She believes her upbringing is reflected in her vibrant artwork. Now, she lives in Germany, adding another cultural influence to her work.

She began as a painter with a love of surrealism and creating realms. She spoke on her artistic influences:

“Inspired by the intricate narratives of Hieronymus Bosch, the vivid landscapes of Joan Miró, and the surreal realms of many others, I delight in crafting new imaginary worlds. Each illustration is a visual poem inviting viewers to weave their own tales within its depths”

Later on, she decided to use passion for creating worlds and narratives to begin book illustration. Since then she has worked on beautiful children’s books and has been published around the globe.

When asked about her many different publications, one in particular stuck out to her. The title is "Olimpo. Le grandi avventure degli dèi e degli eroi" by Giulio Guidorizzi, published in 2022. She calls this her most important project because of the ways it connected to her childhood back in Turkey.

“As a child, I was enamored with the tales of gods and heroes, a passion that was nurtured during my upbringing in Turkey, where I had the privilege of exploring ancient sites steeped in mythological lore. One such memory etched vividly in my mind is my visits to Mount Chimaera, where the legendary creature Chimera was said to reside. I recall vividly imagining the monstrous beast breathing fire from beneath the mountain, a scene that fueled my imagination and love for storytelling. This profound connection to my childhood experiences forms the heart and soul of my artistic journey. Through my work on "Olimpo," I not only had the opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of Greek mythology but also to revisit and reimagine these familiar landscapes. It's moments like these that remind me why I became an artist—to tap into the boundless imagination of my inner child and share its wonder with the world.”

As her agents, we love to hear that a project has brought such joy to the illustrator. It is wonderful that through Maria’s experience working on “Olimpo” she was able to connect with her inner child and be reminded of why she is an artist.

She goes on to discuss how Advocate has played a part in her artistic journey:

“Advocate and its wonderful agents have been instrumental in guiding me to find my unique style and stand out in the genre of children’s book illustrations. Their continuous feedback on how to strengthen and grow my portfolio as well as their wide range of clients allowed me to participate in different kinds of projects and dip my toes in all sorts of various topics that I never thought I would be illustrating!”

We at Advocate are so proud of her work and have loved watching her find that personal, unique style. We can’t wait to see more of the vibrant worlds she creates!
